The view from the Oak...

From mighty boughs I did fall, my mother proud, ancient and tall.
I travelled by palm from my rural calm...
...to be placed in a pot, and later my own plot.
The decades passed by with no more than a sigh.
Settlers came and went, the cottage no longer for rent.
For the cars that paid, I'd offer my shade.
With shouting chainsaw, you may as well shot me with a gun...
Look, you bloody developers, just look what you've done.

1798 - 2008 RIP...The big old oak cut down in its prime.

That cottage is adorable! I can't believe that nobody wants to fix it up and live there.

Great photos, as always!

What a sad story. :( Why did they cut it down?!

Lesley - It's been run down for as long as I can remember. An old guy owns it and won't sell but doesn't look after it either. It's a real shame to see it deteriorate. It used to have intricate wooden fretwork along the eaves and a quaint little porch. I'd love to adopt it!

Floderten - There's a lot of irresponsible and greedy developments going on around here at the moment. Big business throwing their weight around building flats to sell at £250,000 a pop. No one lives in them, they're just bought and sold as investments. This oak survived over 200 years but didn't fit in with their plans. Any decent business would have used it as a feature and seen it as an asset.
I'm really, really angry about it...

I hate seeing the mighty oak cut down in its prime. Great photojournalism series.
I don't think its progress.
