Trains, Planes, but no Automobiles...

It was a relief to see some blue sky at last. It seemed that the interminable grey gloom of overcast skies had hung over us for weeks. Today the sun shone, the moon was just a stretch away, and the scent of spring was in the air.

The day could not to be wasted. I took a stroll around some favourite haunts at Chasewater.
The reservoir has been drained to carry out some work on the dam, but the springs that feed the waters ensured that there were still ponds sufficient for the wildlife to do what wildlife does.

I accidentally spooked a Stag out of a belt of trees. While it was out in the open I took the opportunity to grab a few snaps. Typical... I get it all lined up, in focus, and he goes and closes his eyes!

The two Stags held an uneasy truce, occasionally sparring, but also cooperating, taking it in turns to keep an eye out while the other grazed.

It amazes me how such large animals generally manage to keep themselves undiscovered in such a populated area. They'll stand motionless in a clump of trees while walkers pass by totally unaware of their presence.

The lady driver of the passing steam train did spot them from her elevated position and signalled excitedly to me. A blast of the whistle had them running for the horizon, and I headed for home too...

A feature of the night...

It's been a long time coming, but we're finally there... the shortest day. My long nights of howling at the moon are nearly over. From here on, those long summer days can only get closer. Horray!
As you can see the photos have a nocturnal theme. The second photo is a bit dark, but click on it and it'll get all big and be much clearer to see (the wonders of electrickery). The bright 'star' on the left is Jupiter which is really easy to spot at the moment. Just right of centre is Venus. They are most obvious just as it gets dark. I can see them even from my patch of light polluted ether, so those of you in the darker areas should get spectacular view...

Hedgehogs fight during Moonshot....

It was a clear night (makes a change!) The moon looked particularly luminous and crisp, so I decided to see if I could get a few shots. I was chuffed with my new camcorder, and with the optical zoom alone I managed to get a nice picture. Lots of craters, I couldn't get that sort of detail with my old faithful VHS cam!
Shooting video allowed me to get even closer due to the higher shutter speed..."What's that noise?..."
Snuffling sounds, rustling and now loud squeals! The cat streaks past me, looking very concerned. I quickly unscrewed the camera from its tripod and rushed up the garden...

To my surprise, all this commotion was being caused by hedgehogs!

Normally quiet and placid, these little chaps were having a real fight.

I'm not familiar with the rules of hedgehog fighting, but it seems to be, run in circles and try to bite your oppositions nose off!

I suppose when you're both covered in spines it somewhat limits any other tactics!
All noses intact, it seemed that one had apparently won. The loser retired to the sanctuary of the tarpaulin over the kayaks.

"What do you mean, you want a saucer of pilchards?"...."You had pilchards yesterday!"...

"Don't you threaten me...."

"Right, pilchards it is then!"..
